Catalytic heaters are most preferred because they do not produce a lot of carbon monoxide gas. It is important to note that these should not be used when you are sleeping. You may use the heater to warm your car, but remember to unplug it when you are about to sleep.

Do you have to have the engine on when using a heater?

Depends on the sort of heater. The type which blows heat from the engine into the car ie your normal vehicle blower heater, requires the engine to be on. This is a risk if you are stationary as exhaust gases can rise up into your car.
