How does a heater control valve work on a car?

The heater control valve (sometimes called the hot water valve) is used to control the rate at which coolant flows through the heater core. The valve is located on the heater inlet hose. Manually operated systems may use a cable, a vacuum motor or an electric solenoid to operate the valve. The heater control valve is typically mounted near the firewall, and acts as the valve that allows coolant to flow from the engine to the heater core, which is located inside of the vehicle. When the valve is opened, warm engine coolant passes through the valve and into the heater core, so that hot air can be produced from the vehicle’s vents.

Can heater control valve cause no heat?

Some vehicles use a heater control valve that only opens (allowing hot coolant to flow through the heater core) when the heater control calls for hot air. The heater will fail to produce warm air if the control valve is stuck closed, leaking or disconnected from the heater control.

Does the heater control valve affect the AC?

If the heater control valve fails or gets stuck, it will not be able to allow hot coolant into the heater core so that the heater can operate. If the heater does not have hot coolant the AC system will not be able to blow hot air, and the front defroster may not work.

Can heater control valve cause no heat?

Some vehicles use a heater control valve that only opens (allowing hot coolant to flow through the heater core) when the heater control calls for hot air. The heater will fail to produce warm air if the control valve is stuck closed, leaking or disconnected from the heater control.

Why is my car blowing out cold air when the heat is on?

Low Coolant Level The coolant (usually a mixture of water and antifreeze) in your engine doesn't just work to keep the engine from overheating: It's also the source of heat supporting the heating system. If there isn't enough coolant in your system, the heater core will blow cold air into your car.

What controls the heater control valve?

The heater control valve (sometimes called the hot water valve) is used to control the rate at which coolant flows through the heater core. The valve is located on the heater inlet hose. Manually operated systems may use a cable, a vacuum motor or an electric solenoid to operate the valve.

Does coolant flow through heater core when heater is off?

When you turn on the heat inside your car, air blows over the heater core, is warmed and comes into the cabin. Some vehicles have a heater valve that directs coolant through the heater core when the heat is on and bypasses the heater core when the heat is off.

What does a heater control module do?

It reads data from the cabin and the outside of the vehicle and uses that information to regulate and adjust the AC system as needed to keep the cabin at the correct temperature.

Does coolant always go through heater core?

Some vehicles have a heater valve that directs coolant through the heater core when the heat is on and bypasses the heater core when the heat is off. In other vehicles, the temperature of the air is controlled within the air blend box by how much air is directed over the heater core.

Can heater control valve cause no heat?

Some vehicles use a heater control valve that only opens (allowing hot coolant to flow through the heater core) when the heater control calls for hot air. The heater will fail to produce warm air if the control valve is stuck closed, leaking or disconnected from the heater control.

Does a bad thermostat affect heater?

Thermostat. A faulty thermostat could be behind your car's heater not working. If it isn't opening up to let the coolant flow through it, the core can't produce heat. Thermostats can also get stuck open causing the engine's temperature to stay low.

Will car overheat if heater core is clogged?

Engine Overheating Even a clogged heater core has the potential to obstruct coolant flow enough to cause overheating. A low coolant level (caused by a leaking heater core) can lead to overheating and possible engine damage.

Can you fix a heater core without replacing it?

Can I repair a leaking heater core? Fixing a leaking heater core will always be much easier than replacing one. Since it is only a small leak in the heater core, we recommend simply sealing that leak and leaving your heater core in place.

How do you test a heater core on a car?

Start your engine, allow it to warm up for a minute and turn the heater lever to full blast. If the system is ok, you should feel a blast of cool air. Now, turn the heater lever to full heat. If you feel warm or hot air flowing into the cabin, your heater core has no leaks.

How much does it cost to fix a heater core?

The total cost of parts and labor will range between $800 and $1,000 to have your heater core fixed by a professional. Labor costs vary, so call ahead and get a quote from multiple repair shops. If you fix the heater yourself, you'll only have to pay for the cost of a new heater core which runs between $100 and $300.

How long does it take to replace gas valve?

Replacing a valve is usually a straightforward job. It becomes more time consuming as furnace access gets more difficult. Up to 1 hour | Most gas valve replacements. 1 to 2.5 hours | Valve replacements in attics, crawlspaces and similar.

Does the car need to be running when adding antifreeze?

Make sure your engine is off and cool, the vehicle is in Park or Neutral, and the parking brake is set. Open the hood and locate the engine coolant reservoir. It is often a translucent white color, and has hose(s) connecting it to the radiator.

What controls the flow of coolant to the heater core?

The heater control valve is the device that controls the flow of the hot engine coolant through the heater core. It is usually located in one of the heater hoses to regulate this flow.

How do you know if your climate control switch is bad?

As the physical switch controlling AC, common signs include overheating AC parts, certain settings not working, or the AC compressor not turning on.

Why is my car climate control not working?

The first thing to check with any issue related to the car's climate control or electronics is the fuse box. If there was a short or a surge in the system, the fuse might blow to protect the delicate electronic components from damage -- but in so doing will render the system inoperable until the fuse is replaced.

What causes climate control problems?

A clogged cabin air filter is a leading cause of performance problems with climate control systems, including weak heat, weak air conditioning, poor defroster performance, and even water leaks and air conditioning system damage.

Will a radiator flush unclog heater core?

Flushing a radiator can help reduce the rust that passes through the heater core. The most effective way of unclogging a heater core is by flushing it with a garden hose.

How does the heater work in a car with an air conditioner?

Here a fan forces air across the surface of the heater core and then into the passenger compartment where the warm air is felt. During times when the air conditioner is in use, the heater control valve closes, preventing engine coolant from entering the heater core.

Where is the heater control valve located on a car?

The heater control valve is typically in line with the heater core’s inlet hose, which is often near the vehicle’s firewall, but the exact location of the valve will vary by vehicle. To determine the location of your car’s valve (if it has one), it’s a good idea to consult a repair manual or repair database.

Is the heater control valve normally open or closed?

Depending on the system design, the heater control valve may be normally closed (blocking coolant flow until activated) or normally open (allowing coolant flow until activated). Some heater control valves are operated via a cable or engine vacuum, while others are electronically controlled.
